Some Defense Questions I thought we might change back to defense this week. Please check them out by clicking here. I am interested in your feedback.

Claudia Parr From The President's Desk Subject: Bridge pads and rules for use. To help clarify how we use these devices, please adhere to the following.

A. Use of the bridge pads are expected to be a convenience to the players and the directors. Directors may have players input their acbl #'s via the bridge pads or he may input the names manually.

B. It is up to the players at each table to insure that the scores are correct. There is an error function that will allow the scores to be corrected at the end of each round. Scores can be corrected at this time if needed. I'll be instructing the directors not to change scores after the east/west pair have moved on to the next table. If you as east/west pairs okay a score, then you are responsible for that result. Otherwise, why bother checking after each board??

C. Should you have trouble with a bridge pad transmitting with the router, please call a director immediately.

D. Occasionally, the director may have to make corrections or adjustments because of late plays, penalties, etc. However, he should not have to change scores which both parties have agreed upon during the round.

As always, the director is incharge of the game and his decisions shall govern the conduct of the game.

Urgent - Fall Bridge Classes This is a reminder that the advance registration deadline for most fall classes is this Saturday, August 14, and that the major classes start the week of August 29. You MUST let me know which courses you wish to take AND get the appropriate fees to me by the deadline to avoid a $10 late registration fee.

It would really be helpful if you could let me know by Friday so that I can pick up the student textbooks on Saturday when I plan to attend the Sectional Tournament at the Westchase Marriott.

Also, especially for those of you who previously took the 101/102/103 classes on Monday evening and cannot attend my usual Monday afternoon conventions classes, the next three trimesters are the times to take those on Monday evenings from 7:00 - 9:45. Bridge 201 - Conventions I will be offered this fall, Bridge 202 - Conventions II will be offered the first trimester of 2011, and Bridge 203 - Conventions III will be offered the second trimester of 2011. I do not usually recommend that new players who just completed 103, jump right into the Conventions series, but since I do not plan to offer those in the evening again for at least two years, some of you who have just completed my 103 class may also want to take these classes now.

I have not yet heard from most of you who just completed 101 or 102 regarding continuing on with 102 or 103, but I suspect you just have not gotten around to responding to my earlier email. If you are in my 102P or 101P classes that meet this week on Wednesday and Thursday, that would be a good time to let me know and make your advance registration payment.

Finally, Joe Choate mentioned that several of you in the 105P class just completed on Friday afternoons wanted to take the 104P class which starts on September 3. I have not heard from any of you, but the advance registration deadline for that class is also August 14. There is a $5 late registration fee for this course.

Please contact me by phone or email as given above if you have any questions or to register for a class.

Question of the Week:

8 7
J 9 4 3
9 6 5
K Q J 8
A K Q J T 5 3
7 6
A Q 3
A

The contract is 4 Spades South. West leads the heart K,A,5. You're in a team game and your teammates are depending on you. How do you make your contract? I got a little behind last week. The answer is now provided.

You have potentially 2 losers in diamonds. How do you get to those winning clubs? First ruff the third round of hearts with the Ten. Next play the club A and lead to dummy's 8 with the spade 3. If the defense wins, the worst they can do is to play a diamond. Win with your A, then lead to partner's 7 with your 5. Now play the winning clubs and discard your losing diamonds.

Dave's Corner: When partner opens a suit at the 1-level and RHO passes, many people use Responder’s jump shift to indicate a long (6+ cards) and weak (less than 6 hcp) hand. Occasionally my partners and I have made good use of this Weak Jump Shift (WJS) convention. In my limited experience in duplicate bridge I have encountered about as many occasions where, in my opinion, it would have been “nice”, if not “better”, to be able to use Responder’s jump shift to indicate a hand with game+ values, that is a Strong Jump Shift (SJS). This issue was brought to mind recently in one of the problems that Johnny posted in the club’s web page in which he cautioned that Responder’s jump rebid is not forcing. I decided to ask our club’s “big guns” (those that are either Gold or Silver Life Masters) as to what their preference is and I received 10 responses, some of which were very informative and detailed.

Many thanks to those of you who replied! Please click here for the discussion.
